Nintendo DS phone? January 18, 2007

Filed under: News, Nintendo DS/DSi — shanoboy @ 9:04 am

New products mimic other successful products all the time.  We’ve seen this over the past few years with the sudden increase in sleek, white consumer electronics trying to emulate the sexy look and feel of the ipod.  I’ve even heard of the Nintendo DS lite being accused of this before.  But now it looks like Mitsubishi is trying to take this even one step further. They’ve developed a new phone that down right copies the sexy look, feel and touch of the Nintendo DS lite.

This phone features dual screens and touch screen functionality on the bottom portion of the phone.  Appropriately the phone is named the D800iDS.  For some reason this just screams lawsuit to me, unless Nintendo allowed this.

i actually think that it might be better than the actual ds because it is more portable than the ds lites and we don't know it could really be better than the ds
  • That sure looks to be a Nintendo DS mini? w/ new features like mobile capabilities! Hahah

  • It is a pretty blatant rip-off, but you know the saying that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

Anyway, why not just turn the Nintendo DS into a WiFi phone itself?

  • Yeah the size and stuff is not enough to say it's a copy. But we can all agree that maybe at some point, developers saw a ds and got *ideas*.. don't you think so? :)

I'm not sure a lawsuit would hold water. It is a phone afterall not a gaming device and the size and shape are all wronge. No one could look at this and think "Oh it must a be a nintendo DS." In the end its a matter for the courts I guess, we will have to see. Though.. the more i look at it... the more I think they should have made it a different colour or something just to AVOID a lawsuit instead of putting themselves in a grey area.

I don't think the DS is great enough to actually make a phone copy of it. And everyone is going touchscreens now so nothing Nintendo can do about it. Maybe Apple will though.

By the way.. sorry for the double post.. but i've looked this up on the internet.. and found this article where it says:
"DoCoMo explicó que las letras "DS" en el nombre del nuevo terminal de pantalla táctil significan "directo y suave", el concepto en el que se basó su diseño y que no guarda relación con los productos de Nintendo."

    Translation:
"DoCoMo (japanese mobile service provider) explained that the letters "DS" on the name of the new touch screen phone, actually mean "Direct and Soft", and that it is the concept in which they based their design and that it doesn't have anything to do with Nintendo's products.."

Hahahhaa what a way to try to scape legal issues xD

Maybe.. but I don't know.. I mean, sure it looks like the DS, works as the DS, and maybe is called something like the DS.. but if someone else makes a device with two screens, one of them being a touch screen, will that always be a copy of the DS.. you have a point that it looks very much alike.. and the odds are 95% that it was inspired by the DS.. but would that make much in court??... I don't know much about law.. just what i've seen in tv shows xD (law & order @_@) and played on phoenix wright... xD
  • I think they haven't got permission for this SUE THEM!
