Wii Disc Dumper

Recently a method for dumping (backing up or copying) Wii discs has turned up. Apparently the process takes over two days (50 hours) per disc and requires the use of certain LG DVD-Rom drives. As of right now there doesn’t appear to be any way of using the backups but it will only be a matter of time before somebody figures that out.

So, what do WiiNintendo readers think about this? Is this good or bad for the Wii? Personally, I like the thought of being able to back up my media, but at the same time I understand that this will probably lead to more piracy which is potentially harmful to many smaller developers and companies. Sound off!

It’s always tempting to get something for nothing, but even though I’ve downloaded ROMS and emulators for many years, I’ll always buy the games I would have bought anyway.

When I was younger, I probably had around 50+ NES games, they are either in my mom’s garage or sold, but somehow I feel OK playing NES games because I DID own a good amount of them and I don’t have access to them anymore.

The problem comes when the “dumps” of the games start coming out before the games are released. Also, I’d like to point out that the DS has been “hacked” for a few years now and it’s sales seem to be soaring…

I have mixed feelings about it.

Same here, I have mixed feelings about it all too. Downloading roms from systems long since gone seems different to me. I mean, we’re talking about games you couldn’t even buy if you wanted. I don’t have a problem with grabbing some old NES or SNES roms every now and then.

I don’t care about doing backup for my games or play games I don’t own, but that would be great if it helps to break the region code.

piracy still accounts for a small ammount. there are alot of people who are not interested or dont know how to go about it.

Sounds like the same old faulty piracy justifications to me. I’ll own up to it: it’s wrong and illegal. But I’ll probably do it anyway.

I agree with Erwan. I’d use it to get around the region code just like I did with the PS2. Not actually having to use the actual disc is a bonus as well because I have scratched up one or two games in the past through excessive disc swapping.
Since I’m signed up to a rental service I have no need to download and burn copies. I pay ten quid a month and get to rent as many games I want a month, but only what at a time. Fine by me, if the game has replay value I’ll get a copy when the price ges down a bit.

I would love to be able to get a backup of my Wii Sports (since as far as I can see you can only get it with a brand new console!)

My 1 year old son Kaleb decided to scratch it my disc on my Pergo floor. Luckily we were able to buff it out enough to play.

Needless to say, I would love to store my originals and have copies to play out where little hands are apt to scratch my games.

I probably have in the region of about 1,000 copied games in my collection of PC/DC games not to mention all the roms. But as said above many Times, If i like the game then I will go out and buy it. My collection of bought games for consoles alone would mount up to over 200 and I probably have that many for PC too never mind the 400+ bought games for my Spectrum ;)

In all I would estimate for all systems I own, I have probably bought around 1,500+ games over a 25 year period.

I’m not into ROMs, but ROMs have nothing to do with this topic, don’t know why you guys brought it up.

Anyway, as for me, I’m a neat condition-aholic. I like to keep my items clean and clear from scratches, dust, humidity, little children, etc. So having backups would save me from making accidental drops or scrapes to my Wii media discs.

So any more details on this DVD-ROM drive? I already bought myself a new DVD drive, a Lite-On 20X. Looking forward to some tutorials.

I think just about anyone wants to protect their investments, and being consumers we want to insure our games will play down the line especially with the media we are dealing with these days. I too have used emulators to play some of my favorites from the past but like many people I will buy a game if its any good. I can’t see tearing into a 250 dollar system and making modifications to it like most consumers which many don’t think about. There is a small insignificant minority of gamers competent enough or with the resources to know how to do any of these things. Read some of the blogs sometime, you’ll see all kinds of genious’ screwing up very simple tasks. Piracy, especially in video games is something that is factored into sales from the get go.

I agree with most. My kids have already made coasters out of many of our DVD’s and PC games collection. I would really like a way to play from a hard drive or backing up our CD’s. Any updates on ways to do either would be appreciated.

It’s a complicated issue – absolute piracy prevention would be bad for society and business, but complete anarchy would too. The best book I have read on the subject is ‘Free Culture’ by Lawrence Lessig (at Amazon, or free at http://www.authorama.com/free-culture-1.html) It’s a tricky subject, and a very important one too.
