Seemingly The Wii Is Noisy? January 15, 2007

PreGameLobby.com have ran some tests to see which of the next gen consoles create the most noise during various actions. Have a look at the graph below and let me know what your views are.

Lastly, how can they say that the Hard Drive measured 50dB when the Wii uses flash memory which is solid state. I am quite sceptical about these tests as my Xbox 360 is alot louder than the Wii when it’s on and when it’s reading media.

  • I thinks this results are false. I played my friends brandnew Wii (live in germany) for a decent time and i must say that is not as loud as a 360. Its close to my PS2 I would say.
  • BlueSlime
i dont think that is true, ive heard the ps3 and 360 just idleing and they are much louder than the disc spinnin in the wii, so ive noticed...PS3 when i heard it was LOUD, i dont think ive ever heard a system that loud before...

YOU ALL LOSE! im using a wii right now to type and the only time it makes noise is when a game disk is FIRST read. afterwards its noise level is a slight sound from its fans. and even then u can only hear it with your ear all the way up 2 it, that test was bogus. and the ps3 weighs 16 pds so in no way will it even try 2b quiet. btw my ps3 is for sale any buyers?
  • ive got the wii and the 360 but the PS3 is not out til march in europe. even then im not going to buy one as the 360 is better.

I think we should run our own tests.. Anyone own all three of thies systems?

These tests could be right. Notice that they use decibel as measuring unit. Decibels are on a logarithmic base, which means that an increase of 3 dB means DOUBLE the noise than before! Regarding Media access, i agree, this must be peak values. Personnally i think the 360's DVD drive is alot louder than the wii's.

This test was badly executed. Firstly, all systems should've been tested from the same location, possibly in a more open space than the confined shelf.
The meter is too close and laying on the shelf itself, so I assume they don't know basic physics.
Other than that I believe the meter doesn't measure (as in hear) the same way we do.
And as someone posted, it looks like they made the peak sound their result instead of some kind of average sound level.

When the DVD doesn't actually spin (that is to say, not during games), the Wii is really almost silent. I don't understand why the baseline value is that high.
  • The Wii is no louder than my desktop computer.
  • Ryura
What happened was they took the peak sound. With the tests they did, a person making a single clap would rank louder than a room full of noisy talking people.
  • thanks daniel, dont know how i missed that. all is amended now.

It wasn't actually Engadget that ran the tests. They just reported on it.

  • not really, there is always an obvious sound of a disk spinning and thats when the machine is at its loudest, when the wii is on the channel page its really quiet where as the likes of the 360 has fans running all the time so its alot louder even when idle.
  • Rob
I think it is because the "harddrive" sounds is the sound the WHOLE machine makes when the harddrive is in use(copying pictures to the SD card), causing the baseline and harddrive sound levels to be the same, since there is no harddrive. And the media sound is the sound of the whole machine when the unit is playing a game
  • yeah, those guys know how to do things right.
  • I say we submit this to the Myth Busters!
