The Early Cube Years

In the next Requiem, Nintendojo discusses the prime reasons that a first party game succeed or failed in the early Cube years. 

During the N64 era, game developers faced the unique challenge of translating their successful series from earlier systems into three-dimensional gameplay. One generation later, developers encountered a different situation when continuing existing franchises onto GameCube. On one hand, they had to keep the traditional elements of gameplay that made their franchises successful in the first place; but on the other, they had to appeal to a fan base rabid for more innovative gameplay. How successful were they in balancing this fine line?

We’ll address this question by first analyzing close to twenty of Nintendo’s franchises in the GameCube generation. The franchises have been listed in approximate chronological order of release to determine if there was an evolution in game development philosophy over time.
