Wal-Mart Discontinuing Unrated Game Reserves August 17, 2006
Any people looking to reserve “Rating Pending” games won’t be able to reserve them at your local Wal-Mart store.
Kotaku tracked down Wal-Mart representatives after a report from The Register surfaced connecting dots between the retailer’s removal of Bully from pre-order lists.
The Register loosely connects that lawyer to the Bully yanking (he’d recently started a petition against the game), but Kotaku confirmed with Wal-Mart that Bully was not the reason behind the policy change.
Wal-Mart spokesman John Smiley told Kotaku that the decision to halt pre-orders was not a product of that lawyer’s antics, but instead, came from several “weeks, if not months” worth of discussion on the merits of taking preorders for games that haven’t yet been rated by the ESRB. Smiley told Kotaku, “Bully is a good example, but I don’t know if it is a result of Bully.”
