Arcades involved in unemployment?  Click on the blue lettered “article” to read the publication.

It’s a good news/bad news kind of situation. The good news is that a mainstream publication — Newsweek, no less — has published an article about video games that doesn’t talk about how their innate violence is hopelessly scarring our children for life. The bad news is that it’s, in effect, blaming the high unemployment rate of Japanese youths on the addictive nature of Japanese arcades. The article, by Brad Stone (we caught it at GameSetWatch, tells you a lot of things that you probably already know, including the fact that, unlike in America, arcades are a thriving business in the land of the rising sun, with more than 9,500 currently up and running. The problem stems from a sub culture of Japanese kids who flat-out refuse to find full-time work or any work at all, leaving some worried about the future of the nation’s workforce. Are these layabouts thumbing their nose at the nine-to-five it because they can’t resist the lure of the Mobile Space 0079 machines, or because they’ve embraced the slacker mentality (or both)? Stone doesn’t draw any hard conclusions, but it’s an interesting discussion, nonetheless.
