Gamespy on E3

Gamespy’s opinions about the ESA’s E3 decision.

At the beginning of the week, the ESA made an announcement that will most likely be the biggest videogame-related story of the year: E3 as we know it is no more. The ESA revealed in a press release that the Electronic Entertainment Expo would be changing into “a more intimate event focused on targeted, personalized meetings and activities.”

In the same announcement, Doug Lowenstein, President of the ESA, says, “Over the years, it has become clear that we need a more intimate program, including higher quality, more personal dialogue with the worldwide media, developers, retailers and other key industry audiences.”

It didn’t take long for the videogame world to explode with rumors and speculation. “E3 is dead!” some gamers proclaimed. What happened? Why? How? Who’s responsible? These questions were posted on message boards, asked of friends over IM, and pondered by the videogame press. We don’t have all the answers and we won’t pretend to, so we went to a collection of industry insiders to learn what we could about the changing face of E3.
