Over 21 Million DS’s Sold
Nintendo surpassed the 21 million DS milestone just recently, saying that the DS was sold on an average every “two seconds”.ÂÂ
Nintendo has always maintained that Nintendo DS is the first stage in a new, all-inclusive gaming philosophy. Nintendo credits that philosophy with the worldwide success of the touch screen handheld, as Nintendo has now sold over 21 million units since its launch 19 months ago.
“We’re thrilled to be announcing this milestone today,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, “especially since Nintendo DS was North America’s top-selling video game system of any type in June. We attribute this success to Nintendo’s overall strategy of offering something for everyone– from five-year-olds caring for their Nintendogs to 65-year-olds tuning their mental agility with Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day.”
Nintendo compares the success to Apple’s hugely popular iPod; the portable music player shipped one million units in its first 19 months on the market. DS sales have seen a boost in recent months thanks to the release of the redesigned DS Lite. Nintendo says it has sold on average one DS system every two seconds since debuting in November of 2004.
