DS Opera Browser Released Today in Japan July 24, 2006

I am still crossing my fingers for an American release, but Japan can have their fun…for now.

Today in Japan, Nintendo began selling the Nintendo DS Web Browser, created by Opera Software, through online sale sites. The browser itself is contained on a DS card like software games and needs an extra memory expansion cartridge to use the Wi-Fi capability. It has retailed at 3,800 yen.

The software is compatable with both the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite systems, and allows users to surf any website on the internet as allowed by Opera 8.5. There are two featured browsing modes which utilize the DS touch-screen properties. In fit-to-width mode, the entire page is shown split up onto two screens. In DS mode, the lower screen is a thumbnail image of the web page featuring a pink dot which can be moved around with the stylus. The upper screen then represents the magnified portion of what is highlighted by the pink dot.

Due to limitations, the web browser does not allow for plug-ins. Image types supported include GIF, JPG, and PNG. The browser also features bookmarks, security, and parental control. The browser is currently available only in Japanese.
