Why Gun Games Aren’t Announced Yeat For Wii? July 20, 2006

Wii needs gun games! I hope some publishers are getting the hint and creating some of these games.

When those snazzy first shots of Red Steel first hit the greasy streets of the internet, speculation ran high as to whether it was a first-person shooter or an on-rails light gun game. E3 has come and gone since then, and we now know that the former is true. Nevertheless, Nintendo teased us with a slick prototype of a Wii edition Zapper at the show.

And how glorious it was! Not that the Zapper looked all that good; it wasn’t even bright orange. Heck, it’s not even officially called the Zapper. But to a hardcore gamer, it opened the floodgates for visions of a light gun renaissance. The peripheral wouldn’t even be entirely necessary to distribute digital justice– Wii’s remote would work just fine. Yet, why haven’t we seen any light gun games on Wii?

By nature, these types of games are very accessible– nothing more than point, shoot, reload, rinse, repeat. But in that lies the appeal: gameplay in its purest form. Shooting bad guys has never been more rewarding than when you get to actually point a weapon and destroy faces accordingly. That statement may seem a bit too close to lawsuit-happy Jack Thompson’s bread and butter, but it’s the simple truth. In addition to appealing to hardcore gamers, light gun games also fit in easily to Nintendo’s new-generation philosophy: games that are easy to pick up and play, for everybody. Anyone can wrap their mind around the simple point-and-shoot gameplay.

The possibilities for existing franchises are endless. Sega could delve into their catalog with a House of the Dead Collection or even resurrect the once-mighty Virtua Cop. Point Blank has just recently made its way onto the DS; the silly, party-game atmosphere is a perfect fit for Nintendo. On top of that, Namco has announced support for Wii, with three games forthcoming for the system’s first cycle. Two of those titles are yet unannounced—- could one of them be Time Crisis? It seems only natural.

This isn’t to mention Nintendo’s own Duck Hunt or the lesser-known Hogan’s Alley. Remember those Super Scope 6 games for SNES? Surely the likes of Tinstar and Yoshi’s Safari should clear clouded minds. In any case, updates to these games would be welcome, with Virtual Console support at the very least; and if developers catch on, well, the world could be zapping the stupid grin off of that blasted laughing dog in no time.
