DS Sales Reflection

DS sales in June skyrocketed well over last June’s, selling New Super Mario Bros. for the most part.

In what Nintendo calls a “triumph for innovation,” Nintendo DS was the top selling video game system in June with just under 600,000 units, nearly doubling the second highest selling system for the month. New Super Mario Bros. also remained the highest selling game for the second straight month, selling over 450,000 units.

“Nintendo DS is the only game system available a year ago that showed growth over the same period, “says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, “and it did so in overwhelming fashion, with a leap of 426 percent.”

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, boosted the past three months by Tetris DS and Metroid Prime Hunters, has reached 1.7 million unique users since the online service’s launch last November. Nintendo’s two US titles in the Brain Training series, Brain Age and Big Brain Academy, also continued their North American success, selling 350,000 units in June, while the three versions of Nintendogs sold over 100,000 units, now 10 months after the game’s initial release.

“What we’re seeing is realization of our promise that Nintendo will bring gaming to the masses, ” says Harrison. “Whatever your taste or level of experience, we’ve got a system and a game for you.”
