Microsoft’s New Handheld

Is NOT a video game system, but a music and video player to compete with Apple’s iPod.

…And it’s not what you think. After much speculation concerning Microsoft moving into the portable gaming market, the mystery device has turned out to be a music and video player, characteristically similar to Apple’s iPod.

Over the last few weeks, Microsoft has been hyping its media player to record companies, trying to arouse interest, and will be sending out physical prototypes of the hardware soon. The company will also be launching a program very similar to iTunes to go along with the player.

It won’t be easy for the new device to catch– with Apple’s iPod tearing up sales records and becoming something of a phenomenon over the last few years, analysts are predicting that, in order to be successful, Microsoft will have to push it out soon, preferably before the holidays.

Don’t plan on being able to play a bite sized Halo any time soon; Microsoft has no other handheld plans at the time. If you’re looking for a device to store your complete Foreigner discography, however, Microsoft might just have your solution.
