Why We Need Casual Games?

Jim Rosiggnol, a columnist of Gamasutra, wrote an article explaining online interaction and the necessity of casual games.

Hale goes on to extrapolate his ideas into Nintendo’s recent strategy. Are they the only people in the industry really running this thing like a business?

“Why does Nintendo want to get casual gamers back? Because what casual gamers like everybody else will like. They’ve proven this with the DS and are putting it into practice with Wii. As far as Nintendo are concerned they are actually in a very low-risk position. People want to play these games and they will pay for them. Iwata has recently spoken out about the importance of finding the value of a game that people will pay and pricing appropriately rather than blanketing them with a $50 fixed value that drops within a month. I know I’ll pay $30 for Pikmin and $50 for Zelda. Similarly it cost Nintendo less to make Pikmin than Zelda. You price games like this and the chances are that a Pikmin might outsell Zelda. Importantly though it’s harder for them to lose money on Pikmin as it cost them less to develop.”
